Then we come to know God by knowing His people. This method is a little trickier, because honestly, some folks say they know God but don’t reflect Him at all. How do you figure out with whom you should spend time, and who will show you the accurate character of God? First ask God to bring people into your life who will reflect Him. Then get involved in a church—look for a place that teaches from the Bible, but also lives it. In other words, the core people at the right place are kind and welcoming. (The reason I say core people is because you can’t expect the visiting folks to be kind and welcoming. They are there to get help, just like you and me.) You don’t want to select a church where the core individuals in the congregation wander around with smug looks or uptight expressions. A place where God is alive will be defined by truth wrapped up in warmth. The Bible will be taught. Once you find a place like that (and perhaps you are already there), begin reaching out to those folks with the contagious smile. Spend time with them. Learn from them. Ask them to tell you their story.

Let’s take a moment now to think about the heroes of your story—the people who have already shown you God’s kindness. Write down their names as you thank God for them. (It wouldn’t hurt for you to send them a note if possible. I’m sure they would be thrilled to know they showed you God’s heart.)
